So. I got an old Dell Optiplex for a decent price. Now I'm homelabbing. These are my notes. I write them in markdown (Obsidian). It occurred to me to convert them to HTML and publish them on GitHub Pages. Now I have a website. I don't know if "fun" is the right word but it's close. It's scratching an itch left by claude. It's a bit basic and homemade but I made it and that makes it deadly. I've been surfing Neocities a bit lately and that provided some inspiration. "Surfing" is a bit like "doom-scrolling" but it's what millenials used to do and it all feels less toxic.

This is not the first website I've built from scratch. I built one back when Bebo took over from MySpace. I loved the customisability of MySpace and I didn't want to ditch it to follow the herd. But the herd left. It wasn't long before Bebo died and Facebook took over, devoid of personality, slurping up data and time with an infinite scroll. The doom-scroll.

I can hardly remember what I had on my website. I can sort of remember the look. I had some of my own music - experiments with a four-track recorder with just guitar and drums. Incidentally, I pulled out the 414 again recently and found those recordings. They're pretty rough. I spent a lot more time figuring out the 414 than making sure the playing was what it could be.

I do this stuff because I'm curious to learn how things work and I feel some small pride in knowing enough to actually make something basic that uses that knowledge.

Music is a little different. I'm still fascinated by how it works but I've been doing it so long and consistently that I can make music that feels far more expressive and authentic than just an exercise in tinkering or a rehearsal. You want to hear my music?

You won't.
